Will Wins/Should Wins Ala Modern Vintage Man

theoscars

Every year I try to watch all the Best Picture nominees and as a result end up watching most of the performances that are Oscar nominated.  I thought I would write up a quick blurb for what is my favorite award show and something I look forward to every year.

BEST PICTURE-
Will Win- The Artist
At this point in the Oscar “game” I would say I would be anything, but shocked if The Artist doesn’t win.  Is it truly brillant or is it built up due to Oscar hype?  Is it gimicky or is it truly a fantastic take on the silent film era?  I feel that it does successfully pull off the remarkable and will win Best Picture.
Should Win- Moneyball
Even if you aren’t a baseball fan, it’s easy to love this movie.  The pacing is fantastic and it’s more than just a story of a baseball team.  I can easily see myself re-watching it.  I think it’s important for us to all re-examine how we are live our lives and approach our careers.  This film is almost exactly why The Artist will win.

BEST DIRECTOR-
Will Win- Michael Hazanavicius
The Artist is a silent film.  IT’S A SILENT FILM.
Should Win- They are all great.  What a great year for directors, but my vote is with Michael.

BEST ACTOR-
Will Win- Jean Dujardin
A performance measured in expression.  Totally worthy of a win.
Should Win- George Clooney
His finest work.  He is perfect in every scene.  Measured.  Funny.  Vulnerable.  It’s a shame he won’t win.  (At least I think)

BEST ACTRESS-
Will Win- Viola Davis
Her performance in The Help is so incredibly strong and intentional.  She is constantly believable and is unrecognizable in the role.
Should Win- Viola Davis
Even though for me Rooney Mara is incredible, Viola’s performance is too strong.

SUPPORTING ACTOR-
Will Win-Christopher Plummer
I didn’t see this film admittedly.  He seems to be the front runner.
Should Win- Jonah Hill
I wish the Academy would award more unexpectedly strong performances.

SUPPORTING ACTRESS-
Will Win- Octavia Spencer
Born for this role.
Should Win- Octavia Spencer
BORN FOR THIS ROLE.  Though my wife would kill me for not mentioning Melissa McCarthy. Also I might have fallen in love with Berenice Bejo.

BEST ORIGINAL SCREENPLAY
Will Win- Midnight In Paris
Wonderful film. Romantic and not contrived.  Charmingly funny.
Should Win-Midnight In Paris

BEST ADAPTED SCREENPLAY
Will Win- The Descendants
It’s really good.  REALLY good.  Totally engrossing and poignant.
Should Win- Moneyball
It was my favorite film out of them all, of course I want it to win screenplay.

Maybe next year the Academy will throw me a bone, so that I don’t have to try and watch 9 films.  7 is such an easier number.  Let me know your favorites for this year in the comments below.

The Modern Vintage Man’s Favorite Film – Moneyball (At Least Out Of The Oscar Pics)

Completely agree with the Moneyball sentiment. That movie was successful on so many levels, and yet, of course, it get’s completely snubbed. Expected, since Brad Pitt doesn’t seem to have many fans of the “old white guys” that run the Academy. Either way I think it’s biggest succes was the fact that it whole-heartedly got my wife engaged in the storyline, and really got her into the idea that there is MUCH more to baseball than the players on the field.
